Parisâ heart pounded when someone tapped on the front door of The Flower Cottage. It was all very well working late, but when she was in a building with no one around her, every little squeak made her jump.
When she saw who was standing under the security light, she smiled. âThis is a nice surprise.â
Jack showed her his tool belt. âDad said youâre working. We brought our tools in case you need us to build something.â
âI donât need anything built, but you could help me make some displays.â
âWhat kind of displays?â
Richard handed Paris a large basket. âThe kind that makes people want to hire Paris as their florist. I didnât know if youâve had time for dinner, so I brought something for all of us.â
As soon she lifted the lid, her stomach rumbled. âI havenât eaten anything since lunch, so this is lovely.â Three containers of pasta and a delicious apple pie filled the basket. âI didnât know you were such a good cook.â
âThe hospitality class at Pastor Johnâs church had some leftovers. We put it with some things we got from the supermarket.â
She smiled at Richard. âI thought youâd spent all evening cooking.â
âNot tonight. Would you like to eat now or later?â
âNow would be great. We can sit in the kitchen. Itâs a lot tidier than in here.â
On his way across the room, Jack looked at a large crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling. âItâs so sparkly.â
Paris picked up some empty boxes, hoping it made everything look a little tidier. âIt came from an old theater in Polson. Itâs my favorite thing in the entire room.â
Jack stood in front of one of the displays sheâd made. âI like this, too. Why is there a fire engine in the middle of the flowers?â
âItâs to show people what I can do. Last year, I made some special flower arrangements for a dinner for the chief of the Polson Fire Department.â Paris showed Jack a picture of the fire chief standing in front of his station. âThis is Chief Morgan. Heâs been a firefighter for more than thirty years.â
âThatâs a long time.â
âIt is. I used red flowers for the table decorations and made lots of goodie bags filled with candy-shaped fire engines. For this display, Iâve used dried flowers instead of fresh ones. Are you ready to see what your dadâs doing in the kitchen?â
Jack nodded but didnât move. âDad said youâre probably too busy, but Iâve never had someone come to the mothersâ and friendsâ day with me. Can you come with me? Itâs tomorrow.â
She looked into Jackâs pleading eyes and her heart squeezed tight. Life could be tough, especially when youâre worried you donât fit in. âThe parentsâ and friendsâ days arenât fun, are they?â
Jack frowned. âDid you have them at your school?â
âWe had daddy and daughter days. My dad never came because he didnât live with me. I used to tell my mom I had a tummy ache whenever he was supposed to come to school.â
âWhere was your dad?â
âI donât know.
